The upper Charron ring is made of bronze (friction, 6 mm) and the lower of copper (eddy current, 15 mm inside). The balance wheel is a rolling ball weighing 261 grams. The whole thing has taken the place of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.betrisey.ch\/minifoucault-n-23-donnees-techniques\">MiniFoucault<\/a> between my kitchen and living room, which disturbs it a lot but gives me the enormous advantage of having it permanently in front of me.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It wobbles, but doesn&#8217;t turn despite all my attempts to adjust it. It is now a 700 gram petanque ball suspended by a magnet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Modification n\u00b04,<\/strong> addition of a pointer to avoid parasitic oscillations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Oscillates, spun anarchically one day, sometimes in the right direction but too quickly, then stopped. Fitted a cascade of magnets.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Modification no. 14,<\/strong> fitted a ruler to measure the heights of the stem, suspension and Charron ring. Vital for adjustments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Modification n\u00b015,<\/strong> the installation of a prism to check the direction of oscillation. A magnificent piece of optics that had been lying around my workshop for 20 years, much more precise than a laser beam. It&#8217;s not pretty at all, but so practical! From now on, <strong>a five-minute wait will be enough to see and measure the pendulum&#8217;s rotation.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Modification no. 16:<\/strong> reduction of the lower Charron ring (with eddy currents). This is the price we have to pay to avoid any further wire breakage. We&#8217;re bordering on the limits of physics here: can the Coriolis effect still act with an amplitude of 7.5 millimetres? My dream is to one day be able to eliminate the upper Charron ring (mechanical, frictional) and keep only the lower one.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Change no. 17<\/strong>: the length, up to 10 centimetres.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Another failure&#8230;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>A practical note on the length of the pendulum. <\/strong> You can&#8217;t measure it with a ruler because you can&#8217;t know exactly where its centre of gravity is. So I measure the time taken to make one period and then use the following formula: T=4\u22c5\u221aL:g\u22c5K(sin(\u03b8:2)) where k is the full elliptic integral of the 1st kind. Not knowing how to calculate, I&#8217;ll simply here: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.123calculus.com\/pendule-simple-page-8-20-455.html\">https:\/\/www.123calculus.com\/pendule-simple-page-8-20-455.html<\/a> to do the dirty work for me. My pendulum, which lasts 0.732 seconds, measures 13.3 centimetres. So far so good.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8230;Except that if I lower the Charron friction ring by one millimetre, the pendulum will swing 2 thousandths of a second faster. So it&#8217;s safe to say that this is a double pendulum. So far so good. Not a pretty sight.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Modification n19,<\/strong> fitting of a second optic for adjustment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Modification n\u00b020,<\/strong> installation of a mechanical Charron ring under the pendulum (two hard disks) to prevent parasitic oscillations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Worked for a few hours before stopping. Failed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-vivid-red-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-c73853900dd66c1efa1ff8e4ed4ccf24\"><strong>10 August 2024<\/strong>, modification no. 22, raising the Charron ring by 0.5 millimetres. <strong>It works!<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>12 August:<\/strong> A short-focus camera is installed above the pendulum. Outraged, he decides to act like a diva and stop filming: he&#8217;s really starting to deserve his name&#8230;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>13 August:<\/strong> L&#8217;Indomptable suddenly decides to start shooting again. Camera on at 8.43am.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>14 August: <\/strong>16:00. The camera is exchanged for one with a longer focal length. L&#8217;Indomptable runs like clockwork.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>15 August:<\/strong> First data received on revolution times, which are about 15% too fast on average. The revolution speeds are quite different depending on the position, so all that&#8217;s left to do is wait and record continuously: days, weeks&#8230; From now on, I&#8217;ll be making modifications &#8216;on the fly&#8217; to see the differences. Some may stop the pendulum&#8217;s revolution, others may speed it up or slow it down&#8230;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>16 August:<\/strong> 16:30: The Charron ring rises by 1 mm, without touching the pendulum. The pendulum rotates too fast. (rotation in 24 hours instead of 33 hours: 40% too fast)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>19 August:<\/strong> 8.40 am: The Charron ring descends by 1 millimetre to the same values as on 15 August. Delay.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>20 August:<\/strong> 9:00 am: the Charron ring is raised by 3 mm, the time display is centred and reset to zero, and the time intervals are changed (3593000 milliseconds instead of 3600000).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>21 August: <\/strong>8.00 am. Pendulum very accurate on half a rotation. To be confirmed over the next few days.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-cbd099779b8c1e574a890c6f125e60f1\"><strong>22 August:<\/strong> 9.50 am. The time for a complete revolution is 32 hours: 5% too fast.<strong> E-xce-llent!<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>23rd August:<\/strong> 12h00. All is well. Installation of a probe, a timer and a computer to record each oscillation to a millionth of a second.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>24 August:<\/strong> 27% too fast revolution over the last 2 days. Years of experience in building Foucault pendulums mean that I&#8217;m by far the most qualified to say that I don&#8217;t really understand anything.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:27px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:27px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:27px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"696\" height=\"458\" src=\"https:\/\/www.betrisey.ch\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/mire.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-3674\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.betrisey.ch\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/mire.png 696w, https:\/\/www.betrisey.ch\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/mire-300x197.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 696px) 100vw, 696px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<div style=\"height:27px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>28 August 2024:<\/strong> Here are the recordings of 8 days of rotations:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-video\"><video height=\"1080\" style=\"aspect-ratio: 1920 \/ 1080;\" width=\"1920\" controls src=\"https:\/\/www.betrisey.ch\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/one-week-with-1.mp4\"><\/video><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8230;Where it turns out that it has made a total of 8 complete revolutions that are <strong>accelerating faster and faster<\/strong>: successively 30, 28, 23, 25 to then stabilise at 20, 20, 20 and 20 hours.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Interesting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I&#8217;m referring here to a phenomenon that is often observed: the running-in of the suspension wire, having often seen clocks that didn&#8217;t work for a few days start up by themselves without any external intervention. The rest promises to be fascinating. In this experiment, I&#8217;m not trying to make it work as well as possible: I&#8217;m provoking every possible error to learn how to get round them. In this way, what is learnt here will be used to understand the whole.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:27px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\"><strong>Test n\u00b09<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>29 August 2024:<\/strong> 1pm. Receipt of data from a rotation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here is the time graph for a complete revolution of the Indomitable, showing that it has accelerated again: 19 hours for one rotation.
